What I do

Physical work

Ashtanga Vinyasa is a demanding physical practice designed by Pattabi Jois for 15 year old boys. Since then it has been adapted and become extremely popular. I am myself a person with physical limitations but still I enjoy the practice, I focus more on the flow, the breathing and the concentration than on "acrobatic" postures. The practice is meant to keep our body healthy and brings flexibility to the body and the mind.

Mind work

Ashtanga Vinyasa is a moving meditation (dhyana) that combines physical work (asana), breathing (pranayama), control of the outer senses (pratyahara) and concentration (dharana). These are 5 of the 8 limbs of Ashtanga yoga as explained in the Yoga Sutras. The other three being the Yamas, Niyamas and Samadhi.

The Yamas and Niyamas give fundamental values and personal disciplines that when followed sustain the practice. They are the bases for the yoga lifestyle. Samadhi is the state of peace and blissfulness that yoga brings into your life.

I don't believe in a sequential approach to these limbs in which you focus in the physical work first; instead by integrating all of them in your lifestyle you can enjoy the benefits of yoga even with a limited (but continued) physical practice.

Lifestyle

Ashtanga yoga develops committed and happy people. You will recognize an ashtangui for his discipline and a good ashtangui for the joy for life he irradiates in all his actions. By applying the 8 limbs of yoga you build a lifestyle that is healthy and integrates your body and mind to express yourself fully without biases and external pre-conditioning elements.
